2nd Lt. Arthur W. Luce, of Fort Bragg, California.

Enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 15 January 1942 at Los Angeles, California. Completed basic flying training and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. Underwent B-24 aircraft transition and combat crew training at Biggs Field, Texas and Alamogordo Army Air Field, New Mexico. In July 1943, he deployed to the European Theatre of Operations and was assigned to 8th Air Force, 14th Combat Bombardment Wing, 392nd Bombardment Group (Circle-D), 578th Bomb Squadron (EC) stationed at RAF Wendling (USAAF Station # 118) near the village of Beeston in Norfolk, England. The 392nd BG flew its first combat missions on 9 September 1943. The Group also took part in the intensive campaign of heavy bombers against the German aircraft industry during "The Big Week" (20-25 Feb 1944) being awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for bombing an aircraft and component parts factory at Gotha on 24 February 1944. On 29 April 1944, he flew as a pilot in the right seat of a Consolidated B-24J Liberator (serial # 42-110105) tail code "T-Bar" on a mission to bombard the gas works at Berlin, Germany. Enroute to the target, his aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters and suffered heavy damage to the right elevator. He was killed when his aircraft went into an out of control spiral downward and crashed in a horse pasture near the town of East Meitze, Germany. No chutes were seen. About an hour after the impact, a bomb exploded in the wreckage, destroying much of what remained of the plane.
