Private First Class Sturm was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was seriously wounded while on patrol near Hoensong, South Korea by an enemy ambush on March 22, 1951. He was evacuated to a field hospital and died the following day. Private First Class Sturm was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
