Ross was one of four sons born to Frtiz and Amelia Bonny in Salt Lake City, Utah. After graduating from high school, Ross went to Art School until he was drafted just before WWII.

His training, like everyone else's, took him all over the country, eventually landing him in Alabama, where he met and married Amy McClain in February 1943. It wasn't long before he was sent to Europe and his artistic and clerical skills were discovered; he was put into Staff with the 3rd Army. He longed to have his chance to fight but had only one opportunity as his group was in caravan. As a consequence, though truly thankful to be alive, his points for returning home acrued slowly. The good news was that he had the opportunity to see the sites he had only read about up close.

After the war, Ross and Amy eventually relocated to Houston, where he joined the advertising firm of McCann-Erickson until he started his own commercial art enterprise. It was not a large company but it was enough to raise and train three sons.
