Garfield Harlan Ambrose was born October 3, 1916 in Brunswick, Frederick County, Maryland.He was the second born son of McCarty Garfield Ambrose and Lula Francis Henry Ambrose. His brother Jesse D. Was born ten years before him. His father McCarty was an B & O Railroad conductor.

In Richmond, Virginia on April 11, 1942, Garfield married Glennis Lavelle Mays. Prior to enlistment Garfield was an insurance salesman and then was employed by the US Government in Washington, DC.

July 17, 1941 Garfield enlisted in the Army, Air Force. He was stationed at Camp Pickett in Virginia. Garfield later attend officer candidate school in Grinnell, IA. For the several years before his death he was attached to the recruiting office in St. Louis Missouri. Capt. Garfield H. Ambrose was in charge of the Army’s Aviator Traveling Cadet Board. Meetings, screenings and tests were organized around the state of Missouri encouraging young men to enlist. Capt. Ambrose was interviewed by Christian County Republican, Ozark, MO, Dec. 2, 1943 pg. 5. He was quoted “ the men who put their hands on the controls of a 2,000-horsepower fighter plane and point it into the sky are the constant companions of daring and adventure; of all the thrills of flying the biggest comes from the 200-horsepower training plane the kind Aviation Cadets use for their first solo flights.”

Sadly, on Thursday, Jan. 18, 1945, Capt. Garfield H. Ambrose was killed in car accident due to a broken steering mechanism. His father McCarty Ambrose accompanied his body along with an Army escort back to Paw Paw West Virginia. Capt. Ambrose was buried in the Camp Hill Cemetery on Jan. 24, 1945 with military honors.
