LARGE GROUP OF DRAFTEES LEFT TODAY

Sent To Induction Center For Exams -- Veteran of First War Was Leader

With Floyd Jay Baker of Copake, veteran of World War I, as its leader, the second November contingent of Selective Service men left this city this morning to report at an induction center for physical examinations. Matthew H. Colwell of Stottville, formerly of this city, served as assistant leader of the group.

Men, accepted for military service will be placed on the army reserve list and, if they desire, return to this city for a 7-day furlough.

Last Saturday the first November group went out for examinations and it was reported that 29 out of 101 men were rejected or deferred.

Today's leader, Floyd Baker, was born in Stockport. He enlisted in the Army Quartermasters' Corps on April 12, 1918 and after training in this company he sailed for France on August 8, 1918. Assigned to the 309th Mobile Unit, Baker served at St. Nazaire, France, throughout the war.

One man was missing when the contingent left Hudson and the local board will give him a few days to report. In a number of cases, drafted men have been ill on the day of departure but reported at a later date.

DRAFT GROUP LEFT HUDSON THIS MORNING

War Veteran Acting Corporal -- Hudson Man Unable To Report Due To Illness

Led by Acting Corporal Floyd Baker of Claverack, veteran of the first World War, the first group of November soldiers, drafted by Local Draft Board No. 327, left here this morning for a reception center. The men will remain at the center for a few days before receiving definite assignments.

One soldier, George L. Vasilow of 505 Warren street, this city, was unable to report today because of illness. The draft board was presented with documentary evidence of the young man's illness. He will report for induction as soon as he has recovered, and it is possible he may be able to leave Saturday with the second November draft group.

Arthur F. McEvoy, chairman of the local board, presided over the brief ceremony at the court house this morning. He turned the men over to Acting Corporal Baker, after wishing them good luck.
