George graduated from LaSalle Academy in June, 1942 in Providence, R.I. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on 23 May 1943 after working for Atlantic Refining Company for almost a year. He attended Clarkson Technology College in Plattsburgh, New York as a Basic Phase General Engineer before being shipped overseas. He trained in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and shipped out in the 110th Infantry, Company I, U.S. Army.

George received a U.S. Infantry Citation - European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star.

George was a Rifleman 745 and received a Combat Infantry Badge on 14 Nov. 1944.

George J. Whalen (from Providence, R.I.) and his buddy, James O'Connell (from Washington, D.C./Fairfax, Virginia) were the only two men to survive in their group in the Battle of the Bulge, (Nov.-Dec.,1944). They were both sent to England to recover from frozen feet.

George was released from the United States Army on the 24 August 1945 in North Carolina at the Camp Butner Convalescent Hospital with an Honorable Discharge.
