He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 12, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Sales Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-??787 took off, with a crew of 10, from Libya on a bombing mission over Catania Harbor, Sicily. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which disabled and caused the No. 3 engine to catch on fire. They were seen to go into a spin and crash into the vicinity of the Harbor. Only one parachute was seen leaving the B-24.

Raymond was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
