Dr. Thomas E. Schamaun

EATON, Ohio Dr. Thomas E. Schamaun, 78, of Eaton, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Dayton Heart Hospital in Dayton.

He was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Bazine, Kan., to John and Ruby Blyler Anderson Schamaun.

He was a doctor of optometry from 1949-83 and the first eye doctor in the Eaton area.

He graduated from Dighton (Kan.) High School in 1939 and the University of Kansas and Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1948.

The U.S. Navy veteran of World War II was a former member of American Legion Post 215, Eaton; former member of the Eaton Lions Club, 1951-82; former member of Bolivar Lodge 82, and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Eaton, American Optometry Association and Eaton Country Club, where he was secretary and treasurer and worked on the tree committee. He was former vice president of Eaton Loan Home Aid and served six years on the board. He built bluebird houses for the Blue Bird Trail in the Eaton area and was a member of the Audubon Society.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patricia R. Painter Schamaun; two sons, Dr. Gregory T. Schamaun, D.O., Greenville, and Rodrick T. Schamaun of Fairfield; two daughters, Linda R. Struble of San Antonio, Texas, and Nannette S. Moreland of Fruitland Park, two brothers, Perry Schamaun of Las Vegas and Wayne Schamaun of Oakland, 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 120 N. Maple Eaton. The Rev. Thomas H. Maxedon Jr. has been asked to officiate. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, with military graveside honors. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes Funeral Home, 220 E. Main Eaton, and 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
