Photograph of sons of Atley Elser and Mattie E. at left shared by Janine Vogler Roberts, grandniece of Milton Left: Milton Eugene Hartman; Right: John Alfred Interview with Milton’s grandniece, Janine Vogler Roberts: She had talked with her mother, Martha Elsie Hartman Vogler, 90, daughter of Alfred, Milton’s brother, who remembered this information: Milton’s father, Atley Elser, received a telegram from the Army from Camp Sevier saying that he was very sick. Atley Elser was unable to go due to heart trouble. He asked his oldest son John Alfred to go down and check on him. When he went down, he found Milton very sick with the flu and pneumonia. Most of the base was sick with it. John Alfred came back home and within a week, another telegram came, saying that he had died. He traveled down and back by train both times. John Alfred went back down to Camp Sevier and brought back the casket on the train. The family met them at the depot, and he was taken by horse and wagon to the graveyard at Advance Baptist Church. His mother received a $9 check each month after his passing. Milton had a heart condition and the Army knew the problem when they drafted him. Milton was not married. John Alfred was married.
