In a comparatively short time, approximately 17,000 acres of the rich agriculture land of Southwest Texas, as well as the sandy stretches of beaches and brush lands outside of Corpus Christi have been transformed into the world's largest Naval Air Training Center.

The Main Station of the Naval Air Training Center occupies a site on Corpus Christi Bay, only a short distance from the city limits, which formerly bore the name of Flour Bluff, where today, it is a vast cluster of Hangars, Barracks, Assembly, Repair Shops and Administration Buildings, over which swarms of buzzing little Trainer Planes, PBY Flying Boats, Patrol Bombers and Fighter Planes drone from morning and far into the night.

The Training Center consists of the Main Base and several auxiliary fields, a special Training School on Ward Island and a network of more than thirty smaller training fields which radiate from the Main Base like the spokes of a giant wheel. The original cost of constructing this enormous project was in the neighborhood of seventy-five million dollars and extensive additions are being added, constant construction being in progress.

When the residents of Corpus Christi realized that they had this enormous institution at their portals, they set about at being good hosts, which was not an unfamiliar task to them, for years they had enjoyed the entrainment of winter tourists from the North, in a city which also is the delight of Summer vacationists. The citizens of Corpus Christi subscribed $87,000 for the building of a United Service Organization Club House on Shoreline Boulevard, in downtown Corpus Christi. They also built a new $125,000 Young Men's Christian Association Building. The many churches enter whole-heartedly into the task of making every man welcome and doing everything in their power to furnish wholesome entertainment, as only Corpus Christians know how to do.
