Living Legacy: James R Glasscock

James R Glasscock was a Confederate soldier, a freedman, and a resident of Kentucky and Virginia. Husband to S E Glasscock, and a father to six children. Oscar Glasscock, Eugene Glasscock, Wallace Glasscock, Mdonia Glasscock, Lanora Glasscock, and Jone Glasscock are all the offspring of James and S E Glasscock. They started having children at twenty five, and had their last at thirty seven. Their children ranged from the ages of twelve to an infant one year old. Six children in twelve years represents rapid reproduction rates for couples back in these times. There is no information regarding the parents of James in any census or documentation. James Glasscock was born in Kentucky. He joined the Six Virginia Cavalry for the Confederacy. James Glasscock was reportedly killed in September Nineteen Sixty Four, killed in action. The document states James was wounded, missing, and killed from the time of leaving the Rappahanock, to recrossing the Potomac River. Shortly before being killed, here is a remark stating he was wounded on June twenty first in Upperville. James Glasscock is documented on the company muster roll as a Private Cadet in the Sixth Virginia Cavalry. A little information about the Six Virginia Cavalry is that it fought primarily with the Army of Northern Virginia, the primary military force. Glasscock’s card numbers were; Line One: 50803115, Line Two: 3237, Line Three: 3358, Line Four: 3464, Line Five: 3565, Line Six: 3715, Line Seven: 6482. Because James Glasscock was enlisted between the dates of November first, eighteen sixty two and September Nineteen Sixty Four, meaning he most probably participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Brandy Station, Battle of Gettysburg, the Bristoe Campaign, and finally the Overland Campaign. Many of these battles are extremely notable, specifically the Battle of Fredericksburg, and Battle of Gettysburg.

The experiences James Glasscock probably had while in the Battle of Fredericksburg was positive, the battle was described as a ‘butchery’. The Union attempted a “futile’ frontal attack on the Confederacy, resulting in the Union losing twelve thousand soldiers, and the Confederacy losing five thousand soldiers. The Army of the Potomac lost moral after the loss, losing three times as much as their opposition. The Battle of Gettysburg was a different experience for Glasscock, a battle that didn’t go quite as positively. The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the turning point in the American Civil War. In one of the bloodiest engagements of the war, twenty three thousand soldiers died on both sides. Coming into the battle, the Confederacy had been dominant, holding momentum in the war. After this battle, the Confederacy’s northward movement was completely halted and reversed. The Confederacy never again returned nor made progress Northward after this battle. Most battles after Gettysburg took place in the Southern regions. The Overland Campaign was his last series of battles he participated in, they took place in Virginia. After this series of battles, Glasscock died crossing the Rappahanock. Glasscock was fighting for his freedom, as many slaves were with the Confederacy. Service for freedom was the deal, unfortunately Glasscock never got to enjoy the fruits of the deal.
