Jethro O'Sheal was born between 1762–1763 in Granville County, North Carolina, and died bet. October and December 1846 in either Spartanburg or Union Counties, South Carolina. Jethro was the son of Daniel O'Sheal and Sarah Walker and the grandson of Col. David O'Sheal of London, England, whose plantation was near the Nansemond River in Nansemond County, Virginia.

Jethro married Lucretia Wooten (A History of Walnut Grove UMC, Vol II). No one knows the exact dates of birth and death for his wife,

The name Lucretia O'Shields was recorded in the Minutes of the Friendship Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC, where Jethro O'Sheal was a member, but the name Lucretia O'Sheal did not appear until near or after the death of Jethro in 1846.

It is unknown if Jethro was ever widowed or whether or whether he was married more than once, but he is suspected to be the father of William Chumley, b. between 1795-1800.

A Cherokee Indian Application was completed by Thompson Chumley, son of William Chumley aka William O'Shields. In 1896, Thompson Chumley stated his grandfather was Jeff O'Shields, and Thompson's father was William Chumley aka William O'Shields. This William Chumley/O'Shields mother was Mary (Polly) Chumley whose family lived in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was the daughter of John Chumley and Mary Thompson Chumley. It is believed they traveled to South Carolina from the State of Virginia. (See Cherokee Application attached.)

Jethro O'Sheal and Lucretia Wooten had the following children:

1. Daniel O'Sheal was born about 1785 in South Carolina. He died 1875 in Lee County, Mississippi. He married Rhody/Rhoda. (O'Sheal Genealogy, Lonnie C O'Shields)

2. Lucretia O'Sheal was born about 1787 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She died 1848 in South Carolina. (Not from my research, Questionable daughter, no proof)

3. Henry O'Sheal was born about 1789 in South Carolina. He died in 1851 in Hopkins County, Texas. He married Sarah.

4. Elizabeth O'Sheal was born about 1792 in South Carolina and died 16 December 1868 in Oxford, Calhoun County, Alabama. She married Tyrie Harrison 20 October 1808 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.(A History of walnut Grove UMC, Vol II, 2002)

5. Nancy O'Sheal was born about 1794 in South Carolina and named after Nancy Wooten.

6. Jethro O'Sheal Jr was born about 1797 in South Carolina. He died after 1870 in Woodruff, Arkansas. He married Mary Boyce on 01 Dec 1825, in Jackson County, Georgia.

7. Catherine O'Sheal was born about 1799 in South Carolina. Some believe Catherine married Samuel O'Shields who possibly was adopted by Catherine's father, Jethro O'Sheal. While no documentation has surfaced proving the identity of Samuel's parents, it can be presumed that Catherine and Samuel could have been cousins of a sort.

It was reported via a message board on the internet that a male descendant of Samuel O'Shield's participated in a Y-DNA test and the descendant matched the Wooten family. This could be true, but if true, it has caused some to believe Samuel was the son of Teresa (Treesy) O'Sheal.

But, I offer another possibility. Samuel O'Sheal aka Samuel Wooten was very possibly a nephew or cousin of Jethro's wife, Lucretia Wooten O'Sheal.

8. John O'Sheal was born about 1800 in South Carolina. He died after 1870 in Jackson County, Georgia. A male descendant of John O'Sheal was administered a Y-DNA test, and the results showed he 100% matched male descendant of the O'Sheal/O'Shields men whose ancestors were documented O'Sheals from the family of Col. David O'Sheal. (1690-1745)

This John O'Sheal's wife was Edith aka Edy, MNU.

Catherine O'Shields and Nancy O'Shields were named in 1811 and 1812 in the Minutes of the Friendship Baptist Church. It is my belief they were the daughters of Jethro O'Shields.
