Sydney. G. Gumpertz, a re tired advertising man who won the Medal of Honor in World War I, died Tuesday in the Vet erans Administration Hospital. He was 91 years old.

Mr. Gumpertz was a first ser geant in the 132d Regiment of the 33d Infantry Division in 1917 when he performed the act of valor that won him the Medal of Honor. During an at tack, he and two companions captured a series of German machine‐gun positions and 80 prisoners. The two other sol diers were killed before he pushed on to take a third posi tion. He was 38 at the time.

After the war, Mr. Gumpertz became commander of the S. Rankin Drew Post of the Amer ican Legion here and edited the Legion Annual. In 1921 he was named commander of the Jew ish Valor Legion, formed to counter reflections on the pa triotism of American Jews then being circulated by Henry Ford.

Later Mr. Gumpertz wrote a book entitled “The Jewish Le gion of Valor,” telling the stories of individual Jews who had fought for the United States since the Revolutionary War.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Florence Miller, and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Rosenblatt.
