Alfred King was a farmer from Wake County, North Carolina. He enlisted in the NC 8th Regiment Co D on September 19, 1862 in Raleigh, North Carolina at 44 years of age. When he left Wake County, he left a wife and 7 children behind. His youngest son was my Great Grandfather, Henry King who later married Loueany Rochelle. Their daugher born in 1886 was Ina Margaret King. She married James I. Andrews in 1904. Their youngest son was Norbert King Andrews, my Dad.

Alfred King faithfully served the Confederate Army and was a member of Clingman's Brigade. He was present and accounted for during the war until he was captured at Cold Harbour, Virginia in June 1864. He then was transferred to the Elmira, NY prisoner of war camp in July 1864. He was listed dead on POW records as of October 21, 1864. Cause of death was listed as "starvation and chronic diarrhea." The death rate of Confederate prisoners of war at Elmira was more than double that of any other Yankee POW camp. Alfred King is buried on the front row, marker #876 at the Elmira, NY POW camp graveyard. He along with nearly 3000 other brave and dedicated Confederate soldiers were buried there. Thankfully this POW hell hole was only in operation for 1 year.

I am proud to say that Alfred King was my Great Great Grandfather.
