Weikel, Jasper Newton—Civil War Pension File, National Archives, Washington, DC: Born in Kentucky in 1836. Married Sarah Mendenhall Campbell at St. David (Fulton) Illinois on 21 March 1876. Their children were Edward Charles born 1 January 1877; Francis Almeda born 23 December 1879; and William Leonard born 16 June 1881.

At Jackson, Tennessee in 1863, “affiant was cooking for his mess, getting supper, when one of his comrades by the name of William Burge, who was in an intoxicated condition, came towards affiant, swinging his haversack and struck at affiant with his haversack. Affiant put up his hand to ward off the blow. The haversack struck his left hand and there being a fork in the haversack the tines entered affiant’s left hand on the back part and one tine broke off in his hand. That said comrade and affiant were not quarreling at the time the injury occurred. That said William Burge afterwards died from wounds about June 1863 at Hayne’s Bluff, Mississippi.”

Weikel also struck his left ankle with an axe while driving a stake into the ground in 1864.

After the war he worked as a coal miner. Jasper Newton Weikel died of “uremic absolution” in Lewistown (Fulton) Illinois on 11 December 1910. Sarah Weikel died 28 March 1907.
