Early morning June 12th 1944 Norm launched from the USS Yorktown to bomb Orote Airfield Guam. This flight was to be VT-1's first venture into combat and their baptism by fire.

Also killed was the gunner AOM2c Stanley Carr and the radioman ARM1c Harold Mongraw. The aircraft was a TBM1-C with side number 90 and bureau number 25424 (sources: Yorktown report, AAIR).
