State Commander Vosseler Meets Buddies at Reunion

State Commander [of the American Legion] Edward A. Vosseler found comrades of his old division in Syracuse last night, 10 men who served with the Fifth Division in France. One of them, Levi Adams of Cortland, served under Commander Vosseler in Company C, 60th Infantry. It was their first meeting since the war.

The division, which fought at St. Mihiel and in both phases of the Argonne-Meuse offensive, forced the crossing of the Meuse, which was called by General Pershing one of the greatest military accomplishments of the war.

Commander Vosseler commanded his company from Oct. 14, 1918, to the finish, after fellow officers were killed beside him, in the approach to Cunel, where the division suffered heavy casualties, taking the town occupied by the enemy.

His regiment numbered in its personnel "Sergt." Samuel Woodfill, an old regular, then a commissioned officer, whom General Pershing called the outstanding "soldiers' soldier" of the A. E. F.

Woodfill earned his distinction cleaning out a machinegun nest single-handed. Vosseler earned a D.S.C. in the same fashion. He said here that because of the widespread dispersion of men who served with the old Regular Army divisions, he rarely encounters any in numbers except at reunions and that the group greeting him was the largest he has met anywhere in his travels as State commander.

Other veterans of Fifth Division service greeting the State commander of the Legion included: John L. Sellin, 1114 Valley Drive, who served in Company C, 61st Infantry; Harry G. Sutton, 717 Tallman Street, Company B, Seventh Engineers; Michael Kearsing, 370 Coleridge Avenue, Company B, Seventh Engineers; Burt Hunt, Skaneateles, Company C, 15th Machine Gun Battalion; Ray Haney, Marcellus, Company C, 60th Infantry; Friend Knowland, New Woodstock, Company C, 61st Infantry; Frank Vowles, R.D. 1, East Syracuse, Headquarters Company, 60th Infantry; Leo Bennett, 731 West Manlius Street, East Syracuse, Battery D, 21st Field Artillery, and Frank Early, 340 Roosevelt Avenue, Company K, 60th Infantry.
