Ann Sample Chamberlain

aughter of Cunningham Sample, Esq. (1723-1803) and Agnes Welsher (1730-1783), of Peach Bottom, York Co., PA, and wife of Lt. Col. James Chamberlain (1745-1819), of York and later Adams Co., PA. Ann and James Chamberlain were married in 1791. The couple had 9 children: Nancy (1792-1854); Jeremiah (1794-1851); James I (1795-1798); Margery (1798-1854); Juliann (1800-1827); John (1802-1868); James II (1805-1850); Sarah (1807-1852); and Washington (1810-1891). Their eldest son, Rev. Jeremiah Chamberlain, D.D. (1794-1851), a noted Presbyterian minister, was founder and/or president of several Southern colleges. He was assassinated in 1851 by a disgruntled, secessionist student while he was president of Oakland College, in Claiborne Co., MS.
