Frank (Frans) Gustaf Chalberg, born 1871 in Sweden (Rydaholm); died December 20, 1932 in Evanston, IL. He was the son of Andreas Jacobson Kjellberg and Sara Eliasdotter. He married Augusta Andersdotter Tubin September 13, 1895 in Evanston, IL. She was born 1869 in Kvanum, Skaraborgs, Sweden, and died April 27, 1934 in Evanston, IL. She was the daughter of Anders Tobiasson Tubin and Maja Greta Svensson, who are listed living near her in the Evanston City Directory in 1992.

Frank immigrated with his family in 1888 and came to Evanston in 1892. Augusta had come to Evanston by 1890, having immigrated in 1887. She is listed as a servant in Evanston City Directory in 1888-2. She lived at 236 Chicago Ave, Evanston, and worked for H.G. Powers. . Her parents immigrated in 1891. They returned to Sweden between 1892 and 1900.

In the 1900 census the Chalbergs lived at 930 Wesley Ave, Evanston in and at 2326 Thayer Street in 1910. Frank built the Thayer Street house, along with several others in the neighborhood. Here they raised their children: Frank Gustaf, Gordon, Carl Linne, Margaret, John and Dorothy. John died in 1962 in a car accident.

Evanston Review, December 29, 1932, p. 44 Frank G. Chalberg, 2326 Thayer Street died Tuesday night of last week. He was 61 years old. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the residence with Dr. C. G. Wallenius of the Emmanuel Methodist Church officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park. Mr. Chalberg was born in Sweden, March 11, 1871. He had made his home in Evanston during the last 40 years. He was a member of the Vikings, Swedish fraternal order. He is survived by his wife, Augusta; two children, Dorothy and John, and a granddaughter.

Evanston Review, May 3, 1934, p. 58. Mrs. Augusta Tubin Chalberg, wife of the late Frank G. Chalberg, died Friday night at her home, 2326 Thayer Street, after a long illness. She was 63 years old. Mrs. Chalberg was born in Sweden, Sept. 6, 1870. She came to the United States 47 years ago and had made her home in Evanston during the last 45 years. She is survived by two children John and Dorothy Chalberg, both of whom live in Evanston. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the residence with the Rev. C. G. Wallenius officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park.

Because the 1890 US census was destroyed it is impossible to trace the family at that time, although it is certain that they settled in Illinois, probably in Cook or Kane County. Sara and Andreas are not found in the 1900 census for America or Sweden. They had probably died by that time.

Manda is listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census working as a maid in Geneva, Ill. Anders Johan settled in Geneva as well, having come first to Chesterton IN in 1883. He died sometime before 1910. His wife’s ame was Emma and she was born in Sweden. Tillie is in Chicago in 1900 working as a maid. She married Frank Johnson in Evanston in 1904. They were in Chicago in 1910 & 1920, with another sister, Anna Cristina, living with them. Anna worked as a maid. Tillie and Frank Johnson apparently had one child who died before 1910. In 1930 Anna was living with Frank and Augusta. Carl’s name was changed to Charles and he is found in Geneva in 1898 and 1900 and in Aurora in 1918. He died there in 1926. These people had a hard time in both Sweden and America. They worked hard and didn’t live to be very old.

Augusta Andersdotter Tubin, Augusta left Sweden from Sjogerstad parish on June 20, 1887. She traveled alone bringing with her just one piece of luggage. She sailed from Goteborg with a stated destination of Chicago. She and her parents are the only three people in a collection of 1.3 million Swedish immigrants with the surname Tubin. Although they sailed four years apart, she and her parents all came on the ship, "Island". She arrived in New York on July 9, 1887 along with 735 other passengers.

Her emigration records give her occupation as torparedotter. In Swedish Church records, on her immigration records and on the ship’s manifest she is listed as having been born in 1869. However, on all records after she met Frank her birth year is given as 1870.

Andreas Jacobson Kjellberg was born 1833 in Rydaholm, Sweden.. He was the son of Jacob Mansson and Stina Jonasdotter. He married Sara Eliasdotter. Sara Elaisdotter was born 1839 in Rydaholm, Sweden; the daughter of Elias Jaensson and Anna Jonsdotter.

Andreas was the first in his family to use the surname Kjellberg, a designation that he was a soldier. It doesn’t mean that he was related to other Kjellbergs. When living with his parents he is listed as Andreas. and Anders in later Swedish church records.

Because he served as a soldier, he was granted land at Sold. Torp N=121, Horda, Sodrye in Rydaholm. Horda is a separate town today. Their eight children were born there. Anders Johan, 1861-c1910, Emma Lovisa, 1866, Tilda Marie, 1868-1926, Frans Gustaf, 1871-1932, Anna Christina, 1873-1835, Carl Oskar, 1876-1926, Amanda Justina, 1880 and a son who died shortly after birth in 1863, also named Frans Gustaf.

The three older children left for America 1873-87, followed by Anders, Sara and the younger children on April 16, 1888. On April 27th they departed from Goteborg for New York on the ship "Servia", stopping in Norway and Denmark on the way. They had 3 pieces of luggage for the whole family. Andreas left Sweden as Anders Kjallberg and became Andrew Challberg on arriving in NYC after a month’s travel on May 14, 1888.
