Bernard , was a country boy from Lincoln County ,WV. ( my brother in law). In 2013, I convinced the West Virginia State road to memorlize Bernard in a personal way, at my suggestion they agreed to name a gravel road "BERNARD MEMORIAL ROAD" in his memory.(picture) This was a road near where he was born and grew up and on a road he had traveled many times. So if you travel to Union Gap , Lincoln County ,West Virginia USA you will find this roadway (co7/8) " BERNARD MEMORIAL ROAD", named for this County boy who, while fighting for his country, lost his life in N Africa at a place he never heard of before his arrival in N. Africa. Sadly, Bernard (my wife's older brother) never met, as my wife and I didn't meet and marry until after Bernards death. My wife told many stories of Bernard and growing up with him and her other siblings. With these stories and a similar country life I always felt close to Bernard. Bernard was reported missing in Apr 1943 and declared dead in 1944. He was awarded the purple heart and Bronze star. Joe Kieffer, Huntington, WV. 2015.
