Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Philadelphia, he enlisted there in Company H, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 11 July 1861. He transferred to Company B the next day.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and died about midnight in a hospital on the Hoffman Farm.

The remainder of the War:
He was originally buried on the Hoffman Farm, Sharpsburg, but was reinterred in the new National Cemetery during or before 1867.
