Joseph was born to Thomas K. and Margret (McKee) Parkinson in Ohio; he later relocated with his birth family to Bernadotte Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, abt. 1853.

Joseph was married to Helen M. Adams on October 10, 1861, in Fulton Co., Illinois.

Military records show he enlisted on Augusut 15, 1862, and served for the Union army during the Civil War. In 1865 he was mustered out; he then returned to Fulton Co., having survived his injuries received in the war.

The couples children are Mary, John, and Joseph, all born in Illinois. Joseph farmed for an occupation.

Joseph, Helen and family are found living in Nebraska by 1880 (according to census).

1890 Veterans Schedule shows Joseph living in Hayes Co., Nebraska. Disability incurred: "Lost half of left foot".

1900 census shows Joseph and family living in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska. Joseph is employed as a foreman, carpenter.

1910 census shows him residing at 2233 'T' Street, in Lincoln. He owns the home free of mortage. He is living on his own income.

He was survived by his widow, Helen M. Parkinson and his children.
