Robert Grobbel (1926-2000) served aboard the USS LST-847 from its commissioning on 15 Jan 1945 through 11 Apr 1946 when he was transferred to the USS Cleburne (APA-73). During this time he advanced in rank from Seaman Second Class to Coxswain.

The LST-847 moved troops and equipment throughout the Western Pacific Ocean and was among the first ships of the US Navy 7th Fleet to arrive in Shanghai, China after VJ Day. Following the cessation of hostilities, the LST-847 transported foreign troops and repatriated Japanese civilians from China to Sasebo, Japan.
