After four grueling years of desparate battle, on Apr. 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomatox Courthouse, Virginia.  The meeting was amicable, and the Union forces revered the surrendering general for his courage and leadership.  The effort to rebuild the south and unite the nation was made possible by this historic event.
