SHADE GAP MAN, 23, DIES IN GERMANY ON 25TH OF MARCH

After two years of active duty which took him through several theatres of war Sgt. William D. Robinson, 23, of Shade Gap has given his life for his country. The tragic word was received by his father, Robert F. Robinson, of Shade Gap, in a War Department telegram which arrived Friday night. Sergeant Robinson died in Germany on March 25.

Sergeant Robinson, who entered the service on June 18, 1942, went overseas in September of the same year. He was with the first outfit to invade the continent of Africa in November, 1942, and served for sometime at Algiers. Later he served in the Sicily Campaign and was with the Fifth Army when it established the Anzio Beachhead. He was at Anzio through the entire winter of 1943 and was in a hospital there when it was bombed by the Nazis. He narrowly escaped death at that time and wrote home soon afterwards that he had come through all right. When part of the Fifth Army was moved up into France as the new Seventh Army Sergeant Robinson went with it and served with that force as it moved up across Southern France into Germany.

Sergeant Robinson was detailed to serve as a guard at the historic conference at Casablanca and wrote home afterwards that he had seen both Roosevelt and Churchill there.

The latest letter received from Sergeant Robinson was written two days before he met his death.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Neelyton and was educated at Orbisonia High School. Before he joined the colors he was employed at Mechanicsburg in government work.

A brother of Sergeant Robinson, Eugene, left for the New Cumberland induction center only last Tuesday. Another brother, Jack, is employed at Chambersburg.
