He was drafted into the U.S. Army in November, 1942, and served as a communications lineman in Company A of the 50th Signal Battalion. Roger was initially stationed in Iceland and England, participating in the ill-fated "Exercise Tiger" at Slapton Sands. He saw action in the D-Day Invasion at Utah Beach, in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forest, and in the liberation march across France and Germany until his discharge in October, 1945.

Roger told stories about being in the first wave on D-Day, of being in Holland, being at Bastogne during The Battle Of The Bulge, and being in Germany.

During WW II, Roger was injured, but never accepted his Purple Heart. He felt that his widowed mother had enough to worry about and he didn't want to add to her worries by accepting the medal and letting her know he was injured.

Roger carried a letter from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt with him into the D-Day battle. Excerpts from the letter include: “…You are a soldier of the United States Army. You have embarked for distant places where the war is being fought. Upon the outcome depends the freedom of your lives: the freedom of the lives of those you love -- your fellow citizens -- your people. Never were the enemies of freedom more tyrannical, more arrogant, more brutal. Yours is a God-fearing, proud, courageous people, which, throughout its history, has put its freedom under God before all other purposes… You will be supported by the whole force and power of this Nation. The victory you win will be a victory of all the people… You bear with you the hope, confidence, the gratitude and the prayers of your family, your fellow citizens, and your President…”
