There is a memorial marker that was placed in the Tylertown Cemetery in his honor of Richard Dillon, as both a Rev. War soldier and one of the early settlers of Walthall County. But he and his wife, Ann Lawrence Dillon, were actually buried here in the old Smith Cemetery.

On the 22nd day of April 1833 personally appeared in open Court before the Honorable Robert Love, Judge of the Probate Court now Sitting Richard Dillon a resident of Pike county State of Mississippi aged Eighty seven years Six months and Seven (?) days who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832 States That he was drafted under Captain John Faulk in Bartee (sic) County North Carolina, marched from thence to North West River Bridge in the month of march (sic) next, to Head quarters, and placed under Colonel Blunt in Virginia, but has no recollection of the names of any of the subaltern officers nor their places of residence - was also Commanded by General Gregory Claimant himself resided when drafted near Edenton Sound Bartee (sic) County North Carolina Claimant entered the service [between] in the year 1781 Served in one Battle under General Gregory at the Nor (sic) West River Bridge and Served one three months Tour under him received his discharge and returned Home, Afterwards in the Summer of 1781 Enlisted on Board of Privateer Greyhound Commissioned by Captain Saml. Butler and remained on Board until he was taken Prisoner by Frigate Balboa (?) bearing thirty six Guns (and Commanded by Capt. Kennedy a Scotchman) and has no particular recollection of the length of time he was Prisoner of War but as well as he recollects nine months and then Parolled (sic) ________ Cant recollect any man living Who can prove the Services here referred to has no documentary Evidence at all and hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declare that my name is not on the Pension roll of the agency of any State

Richard Dillon is not actually buried in the Tylertown Cemetery. This is only a memorial marker that was placed here in his honor as both a Rev. War soldier and one of the early settlers of Walthall County.

HE and his wife, Ann Lawrence Dillon were actrually BURRIED ON PROPERTY OF RALPH SIMMONS AT SIMONDS, WALTHALL CO., MS. TAKE HWY. 27 SOUTH FROM TYLERTOWN ABOUT 9 MILES. TURN LEFT AND GO ONE MILE TO THE SIMMON'S PROPERTY.

The exact location on the property is not known. There are no remaining signs of the graves.

Richard was the son of James Theopholis Dillon and Mary (possibly last name Rogue), both from County Derry, Ireland. (JAMES WAS LIVING IN GOOCHLAND CO., VA IN HIS EARLY ADULT YEARS. 1730-1731 GOOCHLAND CO., VA COURT REECORDS.

SHORTLY BEFORE THE TAKING OF THE 1790 CENSUS FOR NC, RICHARD MOVED HIS FAMILY TO BARNWELL DIST., SC, WHERE HE LIVED UNTIL 3-20-1807, WHEN HE DEPARTED FOR THE WEST. TWO OF HIS OLDER SONS REMAINED IN SC BUT JOINED HIM IN MS LATER.

BY 1807 HE WAS A RESIDENT OF AMITE CO., MS AND LISTED IN THE 1810 CENSUS THERE. IN THAT SAME YEAR, HE OBTAINED A LAND GRANT IN MARION CO./PIKE CO., MS, LATER BECAME KNOWN AS "DILLON'S BRIDGE". HE OPPERATED A FERRY ACROSS THE BOGUE CHITO RIVER. HE IS LISTED IN THE 1813 TAX LIST FOR MARION/LAWRENCE CO., MS, WITH 160 ACRES ON MAGEE'S CREEK, AND OWNING ELEVEN SLAVES.

Richard Dillon was living in Bertie County, NC, in 1781 when he entered the Revolutionary War under Captain John Faulk. After the war was over, he moved to Barnwell Dist., SC, where he remained until 1807, when he migrated to Amite County, Miss. Later he moved to Marion County, MS (now Walthall Co.), and lived near the Washington Parish, LA line where he is buried. (Ref: National Archives, Pension Record Group #15A R2959, Washington, D.C.)

ALSO IN 1781 HE SAW SERVICE AS AN ENLISTEE ON THE VESSEL "GREYHOUND", A PRIVATEERSMAN COMMANDED BY SAMUEL BUTLER.

WITH THE CAPTURE OF THAT VESSEL, HE WAS MADE A PRISONER OF WAR ON THE ENGLISH FRIGATE "BALOOSA" , COMMANDED BY CAPT. KENNEDY, A SCOTSMAN. TAKEN TO ENGLAND, AND COMPELLED TO WORK IN A COPPER SHOP. AFTER A NINE-MONTH IMPRISONMENT, HE AGAIN RETURNED TO BERTIE CO., NC/OR TO SC.
