Sally James was my mother’s, mother’s, mother’s youngest sister.

Sara Morris “Sally” James (1886-1967) was born and raised in Youngstown, OH. The daughter of immigrants, Adam James (Wales) and Phoebe Oldbury (England) and the 8th of 9 children, she was named after her maternal grandmother, Sarah Morris who married David Oldbury.

Sally completed her nursing training at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. She volunteered as a Red Cross nurse stationed with the army in WW1 as part of the Army Nurses Corps. After reporting to the Nurses Mobilization Station at the Holley Hotel in New York in September 1918, Sally embarked at the Port of Hoboken and traveled to Europe as part of Group A, American Expeditionary Forces aboard the RMS Olympic. A sister ship of the Titanic, the Olympic handled troop movement to Great Britain after the US declared war on Germany. She served much of her time in Germany near the end of the war. After contracting diphtheria she returned to the US on the USS Antigone in September 1919. Sally became a social worker in nursing for the state of Pennsylvania and later was in charge of hospital inspections.

After retiring she returned to Youngstown and made her home with her siblings, Mary Oldbury James and Sylvanus Webster James, there and in Palm Beach, Florida.
